How to Make a Check Mark in Word

Need a quick way to add a tick or check mark to your Microsoft Word document? Whether you're tracking tasks or creating a form, here are the most efficient methods.

1. Keyboard Shortcut (Alt Code)

The fastest way to insert a check mark is using an Alt code. Hold the Alt key and type 0252 on your numeric keypad. Note: You must be using the "Wingdings" font for this to appear correctly as a tick.

2. Using the Symbols Menu

Go to the Insert tab, select Symbol, and then More Symbols. Set the Font to "Wingdings" and scroll to the bottom to find several styles of check marks.

Check Mark Styles

  • Standard Tick (✔️): Simple and clean for checklists.
  • Boxed Check (☑️): Perfect for formal forms.
  • Wingdings Character: Character code 252 or 254.
