Android 1.6 Donut: The OS that Changed Everything

Released in September 2009, Android 1.6 Donut was only the fourth major version of the Google OS, but it introduced features we still use every single day on our modern Pixel and Samsung phones.

1. The Quick Search Box

Donut brought the first Universal Search Box to the home screen. This allowed users to search both their local files (contacts, apps) and the web at the same time—a revolutionary idea at the time!

2. Broader Network Support

Before Donut, Android couldn't run on CDMA networks like Verizon. 1.6 changed that, opening the door for millions of new users in the US and abroad to join the Android ecosystem.
